Livestock

Established in 1855, the Southwell Ploughing Match has a long tradition of staging livestock classes. Our oldest trophy dates back to the 1870’s. We have a loyal following of established cattle and sheep exhibitors but we are also seeing increasing numbers of new exhibitors, and from further afield.  The introduction of rare and native breed classes has been welcomed and the society has also responded to suggestions from the exhibitors themselves in making changes to and introducing new classes.

Competition Entries

Postal and Online Entries are now available

"I have been showing my cows there for a good few years now, that's the busiest it has ever been. Many thanks to the cattle stewards and the admin people." P. Bayley

"Thank you!!! My boys had a brilliant day with their cade lambs. Wonderful day all round." K. Baker

On the Day

Our team of stewards will meet you on arrival and guide you through the day.  Cattle exhibitors are allocated a suitable sized space within the open sided marquee, sheep are allocated pens outdoors for each individual class and there is straw, electricity, a milking machine and fresh water on site for all livestock.  There is also a washing and preparation area for cattle.

Our aim is to make the day as enjoyable as possible – for everyone!

The exhibitors are encouraged to meet the public and answer any questions, once the judging has been completed, and we find that our visitors enjoy this interaction.

Grand Parade & Presentation

The day ends with the grand parade and trophy presentation in the main ring.  All exhibitors are encouraged to participate, including young handlers, and our stewards are on hand to help wherever required.  This is the highlight of the day for many and a chance to see the animals at their very best.

Further details can be found in our online schedule. We encourage everyone to enter on line however if you prefer, you may download your entry form and post it to us.
If you require any further information regarding the livestock section please feel free to contact Gerard Murtagh – Chief Livestock Steward 07813 041014 or Liz Stokes – Livestock Entries Secretary 07749 861086.

We look forward to seeing you on the day.
